The recent rise of generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) like Open AI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard have gotten a lot of press this year, which have raised critical ethical questions. In this session, you will receive a brief overview of human centered data science, the importance of taking a human centered approach to data science, and helpful tools to help data scientists implement a human centered approach.

Despite the interest and press around generative AI and LLMs, these models raise many ethical questions such as what training data was used, how that training data was obtained, how the data creators are recognized, and how the output of those models might be used.

A human centered approach to data science seeks to alleviate many of these concerns by considering the potential impact of a model on both the model’s direct users and those who could be affected, such as the people who created the training data or the people a model is making suggestions about. This impact, including bias and fairness, should be considered throughout the data science process, starting with the design and continuing into monitoring models’ impact in a production setting, which will be the basis for this presentation.

**Presenter: Karina Kervin**

Karina Kervin is a Senior Data Scientist in the IBM Global Chief Data Office (GCDO) and has been a key contributor to a range of GCDO projects, such as data search and ranking. During her time at IBM, Karina has applied data science methods to multiple areas, including retail, human resources, and data management. The output of these projects has been equally varied, including patent applications, workshop papers, and production software. Karina earned her PhD in Information from the University of Michigan School of Information (UMSI).
